BRUSSELS / RankWire.AI / – According to data released by Belgian public health institute Sciensano, obesity was associated with 9,509 fatalities in Belgium during 2022. This figure accounts for 8.2 percent of the total deaths recorded that year. The official report marks a milestone as it is the first time public health experts in the country have systematically quantified mortality directly linked to an excessively high body mass index across the population. Statistical analysis suggests that weight-related health issues caused more than one death every hour nationwide, leading to over 150,000 years of life lost across all demographic groups.

Obesity linked to 8.2% of Belgium deaths national study shows
Healthcare professionals evaluate chronic disease risk factors during clinical patient assessments.

This thorough epidemiological study examined the underlying causes of death to understand how a high body mass index influences chronic health conditions. The research identified cardiovascular issues as the leading cause of death related to obesity, with coronary heart diseases responsible for 2,009 fatalities. Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer disease and other forms of dementia, were the second most common, accounting for 1,652 deaths. Cerebrovascular diseases contributed to 1,171 deaths, while chronic kidney disease and various digestive cancers also played significant roles.

Analysis of demographic data reveals that the risk of death linked to excess weight rises considerably with age. The highest concentration of weight-related health complications was observed among individuals aged 65 and older. Gender comparisons showed that male mortality rates were higher than female rates across most age groups. However, among those aged 85 and above, women recorded greater total mortality. Epidemiologists attribute this trend to the longer average lifespan of women compared to men.

Obesity Responsible for 8.2% of Deaths in Belgium, Study Finds

Regional analysis across Belgium revealed notable differences in mortality rates associated with obesity. The southern region of Wallonia experienced the highest rate, with 95.21 deaths per 100,000 residents. The Brussels-Capital Region followed with an age-standardized rate of 85 deaths per 100,000 residents. Flanders reported the lowest rate, with 73.60 deaths per 100,000 people. Experts suggest these regional disparities reflect variations in socioeconomic status, dietary habits, and healthcare access across the Belgian federation.

This data publication coincides with policy reviews led by the Federal Public Service Health, which manages national health strategies. Public health authorities are using these insights to evaluate the long-term economic impact of chronic non-communicable diseases on the healthcare system. The methodology employed by researchers involved calculating the population attributable fraction for each cause of death, providing baseline estimates to inform future preventative health efforts.

Risk Assessment Method Quantifies Years of Life Lost Due to Obesity

At the European level, organizations such as the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control monitor similar metabolic risk factors to coordinate regional health policies. The Belgian report aligns with broader European Union objectives aimed at reducing early deaths caused by non-communicable diseases. The World Health Organization continues to recommend comprehensive strategies to address metabolic risk factors, emphasizing public education, nutritional labeling, and early clinical intervention.

These findings provide an evidence-based foundation for health authorities aiming to decrease the prevalence of high body mass index in Western Europe. By measuring both mortality figures and years of life lost, public health planners can better prioritize screening programs, intervention initiatives, and lifestyle management efforts. As regional governments analyze the data, national health policies are expected to focus more on early preventive care to reduce the overall burden of chronic diseases across the country.
