DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – World Health Organization reports that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo might be contained within three months if adequate resources are allocated. By August 16, official data indicated there were 5,021 confirmed cases and 2,378 deaths. The virus has spread across six provinces and 55 health zones. Its case fatality rate is approximately 47%. This has made it the deadliest Ebola outbreak ever recorded in the country.

Thierno Baldé, WHO incident manager, emphasized that how quickly the outbreak can be contained depends on maintaining sufficient staffing, supplies, and operational support. To date, the response has secured around $69.3 million of the $115 million needed. Over a two-week period, health teams added more than 400 treatment beds. They also deployed 100 additional epidemiologists and over 500 community health workers. These workers play key roles in surveillance, contact tracing, case detection, and referrals. The effort also relies on ambulances, vehicles, medical supplies, and trained personnel across affected regions.

The virus has now reached Bas-Uélé, marking it as the sixth province impacted by the outbreak. In mid-August, Ituri remained the primary center for transmission, accounting for most confirmed cases and deaths. Officials noted that many recent infections had no known connection to existing patients. This gap has heightened the urgency of faster case identification and contact monitoring. Teams have expanded surveillance measures to detect infections earlier and ensure patients are moved into treatment facilities promptly.

Response efforts expand to additional provinces affected by the outbreak

The Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare of the Democratic Republic of the Congo announced the outbreak on May 15. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the Bundibugyo virus, one of the viruses responsible for Ebola disease. Since 1976, the country has experienced 17 Ebola outbreaks. Uganda has also reported cases linked to the broader outbreak. Authorities there confirmed 20 cases and two deaths, with no new cases reported after June 21.

Currently, there is no licensed vaccine or specific approved treatment for Bundibugyo virus disease. Medical care focuses on early diagnosis, supportive treatments, infection control, and rapid contact tracing. Health teams also carry out safe burials and community outreach to minimize further spread. Local workers assist in identifying suspected cases and directing patients to treatment centers. Supplies of hygiene materials and trained personnel have been provided to affected communities. Early supportive care remains a critical aspect for those developing Ebola symptoms.

Continued surveillance and funding are vital for outbreak containment

While contact monitoring improved during August, it still fell short of public health goals in some areas. By August 12, response teams tracked 17,460 out of 20,740 contacts, about 84%. Additional epidemiologists in the field are working to enhance detection and reduce delays between symptom onset and treatment. Community health workers report suspected cases and connect patients with clinical services. During the outbreak, more than 150 health workers have been infected, highlighting the risks faced by medical personnel.

The World Health Organization declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on May 17. Efforts continue in laboratory testing, clinical care, surveillance, safe burials, and community engagement by both national authorities and international partners. Recent weekly reports showed hundreds of new confirmed cases and deaths compared to previous periods. Baldé stated that the three-month containment goal hinges on securing sufficient resources to sustain ongoing operations. Despite challenges, health teams persist in working within areas affected by insecurity and disruptions to medical services.
