BISHKEK, KYRGYZSTAN / RankWire.AI / – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit held in Bishkek. The discussions on August 31 covered a wide range of topics including political relations, trade, defence, energy, space, mobility, and people-to-people contacts. Both leaders also examined regional conflicts and international cooperation efforts. This meeting marked continued high-level engagement between India and Russia, following their previous discussions at the India-Russia Annual Summit in New Delhi in December 2025.

Modi and Putin assessed the progress of their Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. Their respective governments continue collaboration in defence, civil nuclear energy, space, trade, and technology sectors. Economic ties have grown significantly in recent years, driven by energy trade and commercial exchanges. Both nations have also employed established bilateral mechanisms to address issues related to investment, payments, transport, and market access. During their Kyrgyzstan meeting, the leaders discussed these areas as part of their broader assessment of bilateral relations.

The leaders appreciated the outcomes of the 27th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation. This commission convened in Moscow on August 24. India and Russia aim to reach a bilateral trade volume of $100 billion annually by 2030. According to Indian government data, trade between the two countries reached $59.86 billion in the financial year 2025-26. Russian exports to India form the larger part of this trade, emphasizing energy and other commodity exchanges in their economic relationship.

Discussion on Regional Security and Conflicts

Regional security issues also played a key role in the talks between Modi and Putin. The leaders exchanged views on conflicts impacting the Black Sea region and West Asia. India stressed the effects of these conflicts on maritime trade and the safety of its seafarers. Modi reiterated India’s stance that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for resolving disputes. He reaffirmed support for peace initiatives and called for an end to prolonged conflicts, emphasizing negotiations as the way forward.

The meeting also covered cooperation within BRICS, which India will chair in 2026. Modi expressed anticipation for Putin’s attendance at the 18th BRICS Summit scheduled for September 12 and 13. This summit will bring together leaders from member nations to discuss economic cooperation, global governance, and other shared priorities. The Bishkek gathering occurred less than two weeks prior, providing an additional opportunity for both leaders to review bilateral issues and multilateral coordination efforts.

Economic Cooperation Remains a Central Focus of India-Russia Relations

India and Russia continue to engage through regular summits, ministerial meetings, and technical working groups. Key areas of collaboration include defence, nuclear energy, and space. Recently, discussions have also emphasized trade, fertilisers, technology, innovation, and mobility. Energy remains among the largest components of their commerce. Both governments actively utilize formal dialogue channels to support business relations and resolve practical issues that affect cross-border trade and investments.

The discussions in Bishkek integrated economic and diplomatic topics into a single bilateral session. Modi and Putin reviewed ongoing cooperation, examined regional conflicts, and discussed multilateral coordination strategies. Their dialogue occurred ahead of the upcoming BRICS summit in India. The meeting underscored the extensive scope of India-Russia relations, which include trade, energy, defence, and diplomatic efforts. It also reflected the continued pattern of direct engagement between the two leaders, supported by their respective governments’ work within bilateral and multilateral frameworks.
