CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Apple has expanded its iPhone lineup by introducing a foldable model called the iPhone Duo. The company unveiled this device on Sept. 9, with preorders set to open on Oct. 16. U.S. prices start at $1,999, whereas in the UAE, the starting price is AED 8,499. The device will be available for purchase from Oct. 23 in over 70 countries and regions. This launch marks Apple’s first book-style smartphone featuring separate outer and inner screens.

The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone and starts at $1,999 in the US.
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable iPhone and starts at $1,999 in the US.

The iPhone Duo features an external 5.4-inch display for everyday use when the device remains closed. When opened, it reveals a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display, optimized for larger apps and multitasking. Both screens support ProMotion and Always-On features, with outdoor brightness reaching 3,000 nits. Apple utilizes Grade 5 titanium for the casing and has engineered the hinge from more than 100 components. The phone also carries an IP68 rating, offering resistance to water and dust.

Software plays a key role in maximizing the foldable device’s extra display area. Apple designed iOS 27.1 to accommodate both open and closed modes. The Split View feature allows users to place two apps side-by-side on the internal screen. It’s also possible to run two windows from a single app and save app setups for later. The larger display supports two Home Screen pages, while Touch ID remains embedded in the side button.

Larger Screen Introduces Advanced Multitasking Capabilities to iPhone

The camera system includes a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera and a 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra Wide camera. The main sensor also provides an optical-quality 2x telephoto setting. Duo Preview enables users to see a live image of the subject on the outer display while another person captures the photo. The outer screen also functions as a viewfinder for selfies taken with the rear cameras. Video recording supports 4K resolution at up to 120 frames per second with Dolby Vision capabilities.

Powered by the A20 Pro processor, built with 2-nanometer chip technology, the iPhone Duo delivers high performance. This processor features a six-core CPU, a seven-core GPU, and dual 16-core Neural Engines. A vapor chamber helps regulate temperature inside the foldable device. Apple also placed a battery on each side of the phone. The company estimates up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and as much as 44 hours on the outer screen.

October Launch Marks Apple’s Entry into the Foldable Smartphone Segment

Starting at 256GB, storage options extend up to 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. The iPhone Duo will be available in star white and night sky finishes. Its initial retail release begins on Oct. 23, following a pre-order phase starting a week earlier. An additional 28 countries and regions will receive the device on Oct. 30. The phone uses an eSIM-only design worldwide and supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread connectivity.

With the launch of the iPhone Duo, Apple enters the foldable smartphone market, competing with devices from other major manufacturers. Its design combines a traditional outer screen with a larger internal workspace for apps, photos, and videos. Apple has integrated this hardware with its own chips, operating system, and camera features. The device retains familiar iPhone functions such as biometric authentication and its existing software ecosystem. Customers can expect to receive their units roughly six weeks after the September announcement.
