OpenAI Expands Free and Go Users’ Access to Unlimited ChatGPT Messaging and Upgrades Models

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is broadening the availability of ChatGPT by offering Free and Go users unlimited text conversations with GPT-5.6 Luna. The company announced that this change will take effect next week, with safeguards in place to prevent misuse. During the current rollout, GPT-5.6 Luna will also become the default model for these accounts. Additionally, free users will see a new Think button that allows the system to allocate more time for complex questions before providing a response.

This new access applies solely to text chats and does not lift all usage restrictions across ChatGPT. OpenAI clarified that limits will still be enforced for file uploads, image generation, and other tools that demand extra processing. The Think feature will be introduced alongside unlimited messaging next week. It enables GPT-5.6 Luna to spend additional reasoning time on tasks requiring further analysis. The company continues to manage separate controls for features outside standard text interactions, including tools with different usage allowances.

OpenAI launched GPT-5.6 as a family of models comprising Luna, Sol, and Terra. Luna is designed to be faster and more cost-effective within the lineup. The company stated that ChatGPT now reaches approximately one billion weekly users across activities like searches, research, planning, writing, and more. With the recent update, users on Free and Go plans will have Luna as their primary ChatGPT model. This rollout increases access to the core chat service while maintaining specific tool limits.

Paid subscribers benefit from a new reasoning model update

Subscribers to ChatGPT Plus and Pro will also gain access to an updated version of GPT-5.6 Sol for daily use. Sol supports both quick replies and more in-depth reasoning within the paid tier. OpenAI mentioned that this update results in more targeted answers and minimizes unnecessary details when a simpler response is sufficient. These subscribers can also use a reasoning slider across web, mobile, and desktop platforms. This feature allows users to decide how much processing ChatGPT should perform on tasks such as research, planning, coding, and writing.

The company also shared that its internal evaluations show a decrease in factual inaccuracies in its latest models. These tests involved prompts related to finance, medicine, and law that required detailed factual information. OpenAI reported that answers with at least one factual error dropped by about 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. For GPT-5.6 Sol, the reduction was approximately 68%. The firm further noted that Sol improved its handling of dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when accuracy was critical to an answer.

Unlimited messaging maintains separate safety restrictions

OpenAI confirmed that its latest ChatGPT models include additional protections aimed at users under 18. These systems are designed to prevent romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that could substitute real-world relationships. They also incorporate boundaries related to sexual content, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted items, and graphic violence. The company added that it implemented new assessments for responses involving younger users. The unlimited text conversation feature will continue to operate within the existing safeguards once expanded access is available to Free and Go accounts.

This update focuses on the main ChatGPT experience and does not affect other OpenAI products that utilize GPT-5.6 models. OpenAI clarified that GPT-5.6 Sol versions used in ChatGPT Work and Codex are not being updated in this release. Current paid users can now access the latest Sol model and reasoning controls. Free and Go users will see Luna as their default model this week. The unlimited text chats and Think button will be available next week, while separate limits for images, uploads, and other tools will remain in effect.
