The government’s Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment puts the direct physical damage at around $1.8 billion. It also estimates economic losses of about $883 million. This assessment covers social services, productive sectors, and critical infrastructure. Floodwaters affected Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and other regions along the river system, causing damage to homes, roads, bridges, and energy facilities.

The government anticipates that short-term recovery and rebuilding efforts will need about $57.67 million over the next six months. The longer-term reconstruction efforts are projected to require roughly $4.71 billion. Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that authorities have circulated the rapid assessment findings among relevant agencies. A broader Post Disaster Needs Assessment is still underway. This review aims to provide a more comprehensive picture of the damages and recovery requirements. Efforts to restore transport, electricity, and telecommunications networks are ongoing in flood-affected districts.
Initial data from the government highlights significant damage to communities and public infrastructure. About 7,570 homes have been damaged, impacting roughly 32,933 individuals. Authorities also documented impacts on 48 government offices. Floodwaters destroyed approximately 55 kilometers of roads, 37 motorable bridges, and 68 suspension bridges. An estimated 1,806 hectares of agricultural land also suffered losses. Energy infrastructure faced severe disruption, including damage to 13 hydropower projects, one solar plant, and two transmission lines.
Flooding Causes Disruptions to Transportation and Power Supply
Government assessments indicate that about 783 megawatts of hydropower capacity have been affected. Damaged roads and bridges have also limited access to several communities. Authorities have continued clearing debris and restoring vital transport routes. The installation of an Acrow bridge over the Tadi River at Devighat has allowed public access once again. Efforts by government teams to remove debris and reopen blocked roads are ongoing. Nepal has relied on domestic resources, complemented by international assistance, for emergency response and recovery efforts.
Search and rescue operations have continued alongside infrastructure repairs. By September 11, authorities had rescued 13,676 people, including more than 320 foreign nationals. Currently, about 5,130 individuals are listed as missing, with roughly 600 foreigners from around 35 countries among them. Recovery teams have also located 1,385 bodies. Officials noted that casualty and missing-person numbers might change as identification efforts progress. Its preliminary review found that 11 hydropower stations and one solar facility have ceased operations. These facilities had a combined capacity of 431.1 megawatts. The assessment also noted damage to 15 power projects under construction, with a planned capacity of 470 megawatts.
The $4.78 billion figure remains Nepal’s official estimate for reconstruction while the detailed national assessment continues. Authorities are still engaged in search operations, infrastructure restoration, and providing relief to impacted communities. The government has also requested specialized equipment for recovery work, including drones, bridge systems, testing kits, and pumping equipment. Officials indicate that a comprehensive assessment will better define the full extent of damages, economic losses, and rebuilding needs after one of Nepal’s most severe recent flood crises.
